Ganga Maya Park is located about 3 kilometres further than the Rock Garden. This park gets its name from an innocent victim of the police firing that took place during the GNLF agitation. The zoo specializes in breeding animals adapted to alpine conditions, and has successfully bred the Snow leopard, the critically endangered Himalayan wolf and Red Panda while in captivity. Spread over an area of 44 hectares, the zoo attracts over 3 lakh visitors every year.

The high altitude wild life park is home to the Siberian Tiger, Himalayan Black Bear, gorals (mountain goat), deer, panther, llama and a variety of endangered birds. Tiger Hill is the best point in Darjeeling for watching sunrise. Located at a height of 7,407 feet above sea level, the hilly trails through the mountains lead to the hill top. On a clear day, the entire Himalayan range can be seen. It is at a distance of 11 km from the main city of Darjeeling.

Sunrise tours to Tiger Hill are arranged by hotels. Normally, the pickup time from the hotel is around 4 am. It is better to reach a little early in order to secure a place. There are tea stalls selling flavoured Darjeeling tea along with snacks. There are also shops from where one can pick up souvenirs like hand crafted items or picture post cards of Kanchenjunga and Darjeeling.
The tranquility at the Peace Pagoda in Darjeeling should be experienced to be believed! It was built under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii (1885 to 1985), a Buddhist monk from Japan and founder of the Nipponzan-Myo-ho-ji Buddhist Order.

The pagoda stands as the symbol of spirituality and peace. Four statues of Buddha glistening with gold polish and eight sandstone carvings depicting the different stages of Buddha s life adorn the walls of the Pagoda.

A Buddhist temple and monastery designed in traditional Japanese style is located close to the pagoda. Spend a few quiet moments here as you listen to the low hum of the monks chanting the mystic peace mantra myoho renge kyo.

Nathula Pass located at a distance of 56 km from Gangtok, is a pass on the Indo-Chinese border. Serving as a trade link between India and China, this park also once served as the main access for Sikkim-Tibet trade. Popularly known as the Silk Route, this pass is at an elevation of 14,450 feet and is rich in diverse alpine flora and fauna. The Nathula Pass is divided into terms 'Nathu' and 'La', which mean 'listening ears' and 'pass' respectively.

The trade route was closed down in 1961, as a result of the war between India and China. However, in 2006, the trade between the two countries resumed again after conciliation. Passing the Tsomgo Lake on its way, this pass is one of the highest motorable roads in entire India. Covered with snow for most parts of the year, a special permit is required to visit this pass.
Tsomgo Lake is located 35 km away from the city on the Gangtok-Nathula highway. This highway is also a part of the old route that links India and China. Worshipped by Sikkimese, this holy lake is approximately 20 km away from the Nathula Pass, while located at a distance of around 400 km from Lhasa.

The water in this lake has been accumulated from the melting snow on the mountains located nearby. The river Lungtze Chu originates from this lake, which meets Rangpo-chu down its course. According to the history, the colour of water of this lake was studied by Lamas so as to forecast about the future. They believed, if the water had a dark tinge, it indicated an year full of trouble and unrest in the state.
Melting snow from the mountains in the surrounding area brings in a perennial source of water to form the Changu Lake in Gangtok. Also known as Tsomgo Lake, it has one of the most amazing sceneries surrounding it in the country. Both Hindus and Buddhists revere the lake as a sacred one.

Located at 12,400 ft. in Gangtok on the Nathula Highway, the oval-shaped lake is the source of the Lungtse Chu River. During winter, the lake remains completely frozen glistening in the sunlight while in spring it is adorned with an array of colours as wildflowers bloom all around it. Truly a breath-taking sight to behold! To add to this beauty are the waterfalls dotting the way like private showers for the celestial beings.
Ganesh Tok, a small temple, is located at a distance of 7 kilometre from Gangtok. Situated next to the television tower on the small hill nestled on Gangtok-Nathula road, the temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh. This temple is so small in size that at a time, it can only accommodate one person. In addition, one needs to crawl to get inside this temple.
Rumtek Monastery, located at a distance of approximately 24 km from Gangtok in Rumtek, is one of the most important sites for almost every Buddhist. This monastery was originally built in the 16th century, under the supervision of Wangchuck Dorge and with the financial assistance of the fourth king of Sikkim.

However, in the 20th century this monastery was devastated by fire. Later in 1960s, an entirely new ministry was rebuilt uphill the original Rumtek Monastery. The new monastery built was named as Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre. In addition, the monastery also houses the main shrine temple along with quarters of monks.

Situated in western Bhutan, Paro Taktsang is perhaps the most significant Buddhist site in the country. The elaborate complex of this monastery, with red and golden peaks perches along a hanging cliff-side in the upper Paro valley, surrounded by the lushest of greens. Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest, is believed to be the sacred ground where Guru Rinpoche commenced his first meditation in Bhutan. Inside the Taktsang Senge Samdup cave, Guru Rinpoche or Guru Padmasambhava meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours back in the 8th century, says the legend related to Paro Taktsang history. It is around this cave that the entire monastery was later built up in 1692 AD.
The Buddha Dordenma is located at the southern entrance to the Thimphu Valley in the Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park. The 51.5 m tall bronze statue is gilded in gold and is one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. The Buddha Dordenma Statue houses 100,000 8-inch Buddha statues and 125,000 12-inch Buddha statues, effectively outnumbering the human population of Thimphu which sits at around 99,000. The Buddha Dordenma statue of Thimphu was built with an expense of almost $100 million in 2015 to commemorate the 60th birthday of the fourth king of Bhutan. The Shakyamuni Buddha statue is situated in the ruins of the Palace of Sherab Wangchuk, 13th Desi Druk of Bhutan. The meditation hall which forms the throne of the Buddha Dordenma also accommodates the name of sponsors and countries that helped in the construction of the statue.
Rinpung Dzong is the main fortress-monastery of Paro which houses the monastic body and the governmental and administrative departments in its complex. This is the basic characteristic of any dzong in Bhutan, and Rinpung Dzong of Paro is no exception. It belongs to the Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu School, and the stories of this place date back to as early as 15th century.
The Motithang Takin Preserve is a wildlife preserve for the national animal of Bhutan, takin. It is located in the Motithang district of Thimphu and is a place of great significance and local folklore in Bhutan. The 8.4 hectares of forest was fenced to be used as a preserve after the Takin was declared the national animal of Bhutan in 2005 owing to the legend of the animal’s creation and its religious connection to the history of the country. The preserve was originally a mini zoo until the King of Bhutan ordered for them to be released only for the animals to roam around the streets of Thimphu in search of food and hence a preserve was created for the species. The animal is native to the nearby region and likes living in high altitude areas like Northeast India, Northwest Myanmar, the Chinese part of the Himalayas and whole of Bhutan.
